Meditation through breath awareness will be the main focus of our practice together. Through breath awareness we will gradually widen our focus to include meditation on the body, on the mind, on feelings, and on the way things are – this thing called life. Bringing our awareness to our breath again and again helps us calm the mind and nourish the spirit. We cultivate patience with ourselves when we notice our minds wander. We practice letting go when we relinquish our thinking and our judgment about thinking to return to the present moment – to this breath. From that place of calm, we are able to look more deeply at our experience. And in looking deeply, we gain insight – wisdom. This combination of calming and insight leads to freedom from suffering in this very moment. Meditation is not about stopping our thoughts! Busy minds are welcome.
Nancy Bennett has been meditating for 18 years with Larry Rosenberg of Cambridge Insight Meditation Center, Joseph Goldstein and the teachers at Insight Meditation Society, and the teachers at The Barre Center for Buddhist Studies, and Spirit Rock Meditation Center. Since 1998, she has sat over 60 weeks of meditation retreats including a three-month intensive retreat, four six-week intensive retreats, and eight weeks of self-guided retreats at IMS and the Forest Refuge. In addition, she has studied Buddhist chaplaincy, spiritual care, and psychology in NY through the NY Zen Center for Contemplative Care and NY Theological Seminary. Currently, she is working on a Masters in Pastoral Counseling and teacher training in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. A resident of Jamestown, she offers spiritual care and meditation to patients and staff at a local RI hospital.
